Description

This planetary nebula is located 9000 light years away in the constellation of Aquila at a declination of +2 degrees.  The bright torus region of this magnitude 13 object spans 30 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 1.5 light years.

This object reminds me of NGC 6337.  Like that object, this one has the following characteristics:

1.  A bright torus ring. We have an excellent view of this ring since our apparent view of this bipolar planetary nebula is nearly pole-on.

2.  An extended eye-shaped lobe area, which reminds me of a smaller version of the Helix Nebula.

3.  Numerous bright white regions within the ring.

4.  A plainly visible progenitor star.  In this case, it is the blue magnitude 18 star designated WD 1958+015.

The inner part of this PN is predominately hydrogen, while the outer part is mainly oxygen.
